WHY IS THE POPULATION DECLINING?
Causes of decline are not fully understood, but comprise of

  • habitat destruction

  • pollution and pesticide effects

  • direct mortality from vehicle strikes

  • possibly disease

  • vegetation/ forest succession trends in much of the eastern United States.

MEET RALPH, THE EASTERN BOX TURTLE!

Scientific Name: Terrapene carolina 

 

Diet: Omnivorous. This turtle eats eat mushrooms, berries, grapes, persimmons, and other fruits.

​

Fun Fact:
The sex of turtle offspring is determined by temperature in the egg...cooler incubation temperatures produce more males, while warmer incubation temperatures produces more females.
